Archival Negatives: A Novel Toolkit for Historically-accurate Inversions
What if we are doing film negative inversions wrong? In this course, you will have an overview of alternative and historically accurate color inversion techniques.
We will present an overview of analog inversion systems and their application in photography and cinema. The course features a live demonstration of high-quality film scanning followed by the application of a novel toolkit to invert negatives, alongside a detailed exploration of workflows that combine scanning precision with inversion accuracy.
Ideal for professionals and enthusiasts in archival restoration, this course bridges the gap between analog heritage and digital innovation.

Courses Topics:
Basic Color Science
Understanding color spaces and colorimetry is fundamental. This course explores how colors are measured, represented, and managed across different devices and workflows. Participants will gain insights into color perception, spectral data, and standardized models used in scientific imaging and conservation.
Imaging Techniques
From exposure calculation to High Dynamic Range (HDR) imaging, our lessons cover a broad spectrum of imaging methodologies. Participants will learn about lighting conditions, contrast optimization, and advanced image processing techniques essential for accurate digital documentation in research and cultural heritage applications.
Digitization
Preserving and replicating physical materials in the digital realm requires a deep understanding of scanning, photography, and data preservation strategies. This course delves into best practices for digitization, ensuring high fidelity and long-term accessibility of visual and scientific assets.
Color Management
Maintaining color accuracy across devices and workflows is crucial in professional imaging. This module provides practical knowledge on ICC profiles, color calibration, and device-independent color reproduction, ensuring consistency from capture to display and print.
Human Visual System
The way humans perceive color and light profoundly influences imaging science. This course examines the physiology of vision, perception of brightness and contrast, and color adaptation, helping participants understand the limitations and capabilities of human sight in relation to imaging technologies.
